http://www.articlealley.com/article_1211017_26.htmlI love to eat--probably more than I should--and I can say that Blue Highway pizza is absolutely my favorite pizza in Gainesville.I actually first heard about Blue Highway from the owner of Sweet Dreams Ice Cream, who is something of a local foodie himself. When I get home I checked out their website, and immediately got excited. You see, I'm the sort of person who really likes to make food from scratch. Even when I use condiments that I didn't make, I feel like I'm 'cheating.' I want to be able to do things on my own--plus, when you make food yourself, there's no fake crap in it, which makes it much healthier.Anyway, because of all that, I was very excited to see on the Blue Highway website that they make all of their own bread and pizza dough in-house, every day. That was a big plus. However, I was absolutely bowled over when I saw that they made their own sauces and dressings too. Dressings! How cool is that? I don't think I've ever been to another restaurant anywhere that makes its own dressings, certainly not anywhere in Gainesville.Anyway, after taking a look at the Blue Highway website, I was very excited to drive over and try their pizza. The drive was quicker than I expected, and soon we were all checking out the menu.My brother and I are not known for shyness when it comes to ordering, and if my memory serves me we probably ordered around a dozen total menu items for four people. We ordered sicillian pizzas, regular pizzas, calzones, sandwiches, salads... everything was delicious. One of the highlights was the creamy gorgonzola dressing (homemade, of course), which I think I actually put on everything that I ate.At the end of the meal we were offered dessert... and how could we resist? They have home-made cannolis, brownies, and key lime pie, so naturally we tried one of each and we were not disappointed. The cammolis were delicious, creamy, and crunchy. The brownie was big, dense, and very chocolatey, and the key lime pie was fresh and tart and delicious. The entire meal was unbelievable, but we also just had a great time in general. The atmosphere and ambience are very relaxed and friendly, which creates the perfect place to unwind and enjoy time with family and friends. What I couldn't believe, though, was the prices. At Blue Highway I had one of my best culinary experiences in Gainesville--certainly the best pizza in Gainesville--and the prices were on par with or lower than their competitors.Did I mention the varieties of pizza? Pizza with roasted vegetables, meatballs, herbs, sausage, ham, pepperoni, different cheeses... you name it, they had it, and everything was done to perfection. One way you know that they're doing it right is that in both location the kitchens are wide open the dining area. You can see guys in chef hats tossing pizza dough and making sauces, right there in front of you.Well, my Blue Highway experience was really fantastic. In fact, it was so good, that when my brother and I were trying to decide where to have lunch the next day... we went right back. We saw a couple of surprised faces--understandable, considering how much we had eaten there so recently--and the food was, again, wonderful. Actually, since I had Blue Highway leftovers that night, I really ended up eating their pizza three meals in a row. And for a guy who likes variety like I do to have the same food three meals straight is really ssaying something.Gainesville is a college town, so the pizza competition is pretty stiff. But Blue Highway is king, so you should definitely check it out. |
